UNB, Dhaka :
Chittagong city unit Awami League president ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury on Saturday said all need to work together to ensure the win of party-backed mayoral candidate, AJM Nasir Uddin, in the upcoming Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) elections.
Talking to UNB, the veteran politician and former CCC mayor said he is fully confident of AJM Nasir’s success in the polls, billed for April 28 next.
“Probably, you know about me better. I’ve long experience. So, I know better the election techniques and we’ll win the voters’ hearts,” he said.
The AL leader, who had earlier been elected CCC mayor thrice, in 1994, 2000 and 2005, said he has sketched out a plan in consultation with all leaders to ensure Nasir’s win. “If we can implement it, we’ ll win.”
Responding to a question, Mohiuddin said he will try to implement his development plan through Nasir if he is elected, keeping people’s welfare at the centre.
“There had been development in my tenures. More development will be there in the coming days…Mohiuddin Chowdhury doesn’t need any post,” he added. Mohiuddin had earlier declared himself as the mayoral candidate ‘backed’ by the AL-led 14-party combine.
Incumbent CCC mayor Manzur Alam defeated his political mentor Mohiuddin in the 2010 mayoral election.
Meanwhile, AJM Nasir started his informal pre-election work seeking blessings from his mother on Saturday.
He is likely to meet city AL leaders, including Mohiuddin Chowdhury, tonight (Saturday night).
Nasir could not be reached over phone for comments despite repeated attempts.
However, his media spokesperson Ujjal Dutta told UNB quoting him that he has taken the election as an opportunity to serve the people of Chittagong. “I seek blessings and support from all so that I can serve people,” Ujjal quoted Nasir as saying.
Meanwhile, Awami League central body has decided to back Chittagong city unit general secretary AJM Nasir Uddin as a mayoral candidate for the election.
The decision was taken at a meeting at Ganabhaban in Dhaka, held with party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
AJM Nasir was given the go-ahead signal to contest the CCC election as a mayoral candidate after a threadbare discussion on different issues with the party leaders from Chittagong.
