The construction works of a 91-km pipeline for transmission of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Moheshkhali to Anwara in Chittagong district would be completed by December this year.
“We are constructing the 91-km gas pipeline from Moheshkhali to Anwara for smooth transmission of imported LNG through the Floating Storage and Re-gasification Unit (FSRU) terminal to be completed next year,” State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Wednesday.
He said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Haisna has undertaken this project at a cost of Taka 1,039 crore to install the 30-inch 91-km pipeline to ensure energy security in the country.
According to the project details, the gas transmission line is being set up to facilitate supply of LNG to be imported through the proposed Maheshkhali LNG terminal.
Installation of two “city gate” metering stations is being under way, which would be completed at end of December this year. The imported LNG would be supplied to the national grid through the pipeline, the project details said.
Due to depleting gas reserve against the skyrocketing demand, the government eyes to augment gas supply by 500mmcfd per day in 2018 through importing LNG from abroad.
In line with Speedy Supply of Power and Energy (Special Provision) Act, 2010, the government has a plan to set up offshore and onshore LNG terminals at Maheshkhali.
The pipeline is expected to boost industrial activities and create more jobs in the country as it will feed existing and upcoming power plants, fertiliser factories and other industries in Dhaka and Chittagong with imported LNG.
Gas Transmission Company Ltd (GTCL) under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources is implementing the project.
Besides, works for land acquiring are underway for construction of 79-kms parallel 42-inch wide gas pipeline from Moheshkhali to Anwara. Materials are being procured for the project. The estimated cost for constructing this project is Taka 1,109 crore, officials said.
Meanwhile, the authority is continuing discussion with the Singapore-based Excelerate Energy for construction of the FSRU at Moheshkhali in the Bay of Bengal.
The government would procure LNG from countries like Qatar for supplying to the FRSU terminal, from where LNG would be re-gasified for use.
