UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh is set to sing a final joint venture agreement (JVA) with Malaysia today to set up a 1320 MW coal-fired power plant in Moheshkhali, Chittagong.
Official sources said, a delegation of the Power Division, led by State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid, already left here for
Kuala Lumpur to sign the agreement for the proposed power plant which will have two thermal units with 660-MW capacity each. Power secretary Monwar Islam and PDB chairman Shamsul Hasan Mia are there in the delegation.
The proposed deal is similar of some previous deals signed between Dhaka and New Delhi for setting up Rampal power plant and also between Dhaka and Beijing for a Paira power plant, said a Power Division official. Bangladesh and Malaysia have 50:50 equity in their JV project.
Bangladesh state-owned Power Development Board (PDB) will represent Dhaka while a consortium of two Malaysian companies-Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Powertek Energy Berhad (PB) — will represent Kuala Lumpur in the project.
