India Today :
PM Modi had earlier called Imran Khan on his victory in Pakistan’s 2018 general elections.
In his first press conference as Pakistan’s foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to Imran Khan inviting him for talks.
According to the Pakistan daily Dawn, Qureshi told the media that PM Modi has written a letter to PM Imran Khan in which he has indicated talks between the two countries should begin.
India, however, has denied Pakistan minister’s claims on talks. According to top diplomatic sources, PM Modi wrote a letter to Imran Khan to congratulate him but there was mention of dialogues in it.
In the same press conference, new Pakistan minister also said that India will have to understand the importance of the Kashmir issue. “I want to tell India that there is no space for adventurism. We are not only your neighbour but also an atomic power,” Qureshi said.
Qureshi’s statement came minutes after he took oath along with fifteen other members of Imran Khan’s 21-strong cabinet in Islamabad.
Qureshi was the foreign minister from 2008 to 2011 as well under the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government. He was also in India during the terror attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 that claimed 166 lives.
Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan on August 18 took oath as the 22nd prime minister of Pakistan. In the July 25 elections, Imran Khan’s PTI won 116 of the directly contested 272 seats. In a televised speech shortly after the elections, he had called for dialogue with India.
