TNN, Mumbai :
BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Sunday took direct aim at former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan for his involvement in the multi-crore Adarsh scam.
Speaking at an election rally in Nanded, Modi said while Congress president Rahul Gandhi said there will be absolutely no compromise on corruption and corrupt politicians, the party has nominated Chavan who has been held guilty by a judicial commission in the scam. Modi added that if the party wins the next Lok Sabha polls, it will take action against all those involved in the scam.
Chavan got the Congress ticket from Nanded after many flip-flops by the party on the issue. Devoting nearly half the time in his 20-minute speech to Chavan and Adarsh scam, Modi said Chavan’s nomination shows how serious the Congress is about tackling corruption in the country.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi had earlier defended the party’s decision to field Chavan, saying he has not been “barred” by any law from contesting polls. TOI had reported that the Congress had felt it necessary to nominate Ashok Chavan as the party has no other face in its traditional Marathwada stronghold.
