Modernisation of armed forces to continue: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday expressed her firm resolve to continue her government’s work to modernise the armed forces and do whatever is necessary for ensuring the welfare of valiant freedom fighters and their successors.
The Prime Minister said this while addressing a reception accorded to the gallantry award winning freedom fighters and their successors at the Armed Forces Division at Dhaka Cantonment marking the Armed Forces Day 2016. During the function, Sheikh Hasina distributed identity cards, the first of its kind, among the armed forces gallantry award-recipient freedom fighters who are alive.
The Prime Minister said it is the national duty to recall the outstanding contributions of the valiant freedom fighters during the Liberation War with deep gratitude. “Our government is firm in protecting the glorious history and tradition of the Liberation War.” She said the present government will undertake a modern database programme to publish a complete list of freedom fighters as it will help award a flaw-less list of freedom fighters before the nation.
Mentioning that the great responsibility of protecting the country’s independence is bestowed upon the Armed Forces, Hasina said the patriotic Armed Forces are also providing necessary support in tackling natural disasters, country’s development activities, constructing infrastructures and maintaining law and order.
“For this, our government is firm to ensure the modernisation of the Armed Forces as well as its physical and infrastructural development and ensuring its various welfare activities,” she added.
Hasina went on saying, “We’ve lifted the country to international standard in all fields and now it’s is getting respect across the globe…Bangladesh is now a ‘role model’ of development… you’ll also brighten the image of the country abroad.” The Prime Minister said she was very much delighted to distribute identity cards among the gallantry award winning freedom fighters on this Armed Forces Day.
Through this cards, she said, they would enjoy hassle-free travel in Bangladesh Railway, domestic river transport and ferry and in all
buses of BRTC without any fare, could travel by Bangladesh Biman once a year on international route without any fare alongside one time travel in their life without any fare for performing the holy hajj or umrah, using the VIP lounge of the airports as well as using the VIP rooms and cabins while in ferry. Highlighting various steps taken by her government for the welfare of freedom fighters, Hasina said that their monthly allowances has been raised gradually to Tk 10,000 from the previous Tk 900 as well as raising the number of allowance beneficiaries to two lakh from the existing one lakh, work is underway to construct Muktijoddha complex buildings in some 422 upazilas under a Tk 1078 crore project.
She said some 161 Muktijoddha Complex buildings have so far been completed while work is on to complete buildings in some 69 upazilas. A process is underway to construct Muktijoddha Complex buildings in the rest of the upazilas.
“With this, the nation will be able to know the real history of the Liberation War and no one would dare to distort its history,” she added. At the function, the Prime Minister presented honorarium cheques, and gifts, including ‘shwal’ and mobile tabs to the successors of seven Birshreshthos as well as other gallantry award-recipients. She also handed over ‘Bahini Padak’ (forces medals) and “Osamanya Seba Padak” (outstanding service medals) among five armed forces officers in recognition of their heroic role during the war and also peacetime.
Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division (AFD) Lt Gen Md Mahfuzur Rahman delivered the welcome address at the function. Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, PM’s Security Adviser Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddiq, Chief of Army Staff General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Haque, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmad and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar and high civil and military officials were present.
