Moderna on Friday became the third Covid-19 vaccine authorized for use in the UK.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) of the UK authorized the vaccine after months of rigorous testing, said a statement from the UK’s Department of Health quoted by CNN.
“This is further great news and another weapon in our arsenal to tame this awful disease,” UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said in the statement.
The UK has also agreed to buy an additional 10 million doses of the Moderna vaccine, taking their total order to 17 million.
Delivery of supplies is expected from spring, after Moderna expands its
production capability, the statement added.
“We have already vaccinated nearly 1.5 million people across the UK and Moderna’s vaccine will allow us to accelerate our vaccination program even further once doses become available from the spring,” Hancock said.
According to data released in November last year, the Moderna vaccine is 94.5% effective with no serious side effects. It uses the same technique to activate the body’s immune system as the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Moderna vaccine received EU authorization.
