The authorities have brought down mobile internet speed and suspended all kinds of 3G and 4G mobile internet services across the country for the next 24 hours following the demand of the law enforcement agencies in a bid to control the ongoing student agitation.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) put forward the order to all mobile phone operators this afternoon and asked the companies to comply with the order from 7:30pm, said a top executive of a mobile operator.
“The telecom regulator asked us to bring down the speed of internet for next 24 hours and after that they will evaluate the situation,” said the executive requesting anonymity.
Following the bringing down of the internet speed, people will be able to remain connected but they cannot do any heavy work through their mobile phones.
“It will take huge time to upload a picture or video in the internet due to the slow speed,” the executive said.
However, no BTRC official was willing to comment in this regard.
Earlier on Thursday, top police officials at a high level policy making meeting recommended for bringing down mobile internet speed to 2G speed for the time being.
