The government has asked the Petrobangla (Bangladesh Oil, Gas & Mineral Corporation) to operate mobile courts against supplying of natural compressed gas for the illegal cylinders in the greater national interest and public safety.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has issued a circular to this effect that no natural gas shall be supplied for use in the illegal, unauthorized and substandard cylinders and also banning transportation of gas-filled cylinders in the covered vans.
According to the circular, the state-run Petrobangla would operate mobile courts in this respect with coordination of the Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL), Department of Explosives and Deputy Commissioners concerned.
Acting against this dangerous business, a Petrobangla team visited and inspected 10 CNG Filling Stations under Gazipur district recently and they found that expired and unsafe cylinders were being randomly used in the CNG driven vehicles, posing risks of explosion and fatal accidents.
According to rules, it is mandatory to re-test the cylinders after every five years but the transport owners are not following the directives. As per the international guidelines and the government rules, gas cylinders must undergo fitness tests in every five years.
Talking to The New Nation on Monday, General Manager (CNG) of RPGCL Engineer Mohammad Ali Biswas said the CNG-run vehicles must take their fitness certificate every year to ensure their safety.
