The much awaited auction of the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) will be held on September 21 under the supervision of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
BTRC Chairman Dr. Shahjahan Mahmood announced the date at a press conference in its office on Tuesday.
The chairman said, the regulator will invite applications from June 16. Base price of the auction as well as the bank guarantee amount will be Tk one crore each.
The annual license renewal fee will be Tk 20 lakh, while the company will have to share 5.5 percent revenue with the BTRC. The Commission has fixed Tk one lakh as the application fee and Tk 10 lakh as the earnest money.
After the bidding process, a license will be given to an independent company for 15 years to run the MNP system. The company will have to roll out the MNP service within six months after getting the license.
Last month, the Prime Minister’s Office gave approval for the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service that allows subscribers to switch between operators without changing their phone number.
Once the MNP is introduced, customers can switch from one mobile phone operator to another, while keeping their number unchanged within the country’s territory and they can avail the facility again after 40 days with a subscription fee of Tk 30.
Any registered Bangladeshi company can participate in the bidding, but no mobile operators are eligible for the bidding.
