The students of Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) on Thursday boycotted the classes and the examinations following a sexual assault of a female student by an outsider.
The students also condemned and protested the college authorities’ negligence over the allegation of stalking.
They alleged that the administration has failed to ensure a congenial atmosphere on the campus.
College sources said, a youth made an indecent gesture towards a second-year female student of the medical college when she was returning to her hostel on Wednesday afternoon.
She immediately informed the matter to the hostel super Dr Nahida Akhter and Principal Professor Dr Anwer Hossain.
Instead of taking any action, the college authorities tried to hush-up the incident, which enraged the students.
The incident spread immediately around the campus and the students decided to stage agitation on Thursday.
Following the decision the students brought out a procession on the campus and held a rally.
They also beat up a fourth-grade employee Raja Mia who was on the spot during the stalking.
All the fourth-grade employees of the college are on work abstention since the assault.
In this circumstance, the college administration held a meeting with the students and employees in the afternoon.
Principal of the college Professor Dr Anwer Hossain told The New Nation that they had assured the students of taking immediate measurers to ensure security.
“We have suspended two fourth class employees for their negligence in duties,” he said.
He said that the students would take part in the classes and the examination from Sunday.
Sub-inspector (SI) Shofiqul Islam, Police Camp in-Charge of Mymenshingh Medical College, said they are looking into the stalker.
