Heavy downpour paralysed normal life in capital Dhaka and elsewhere in the country on Wednesday. Besides, nor’wester coupled with hailstorm also lashed some places in the country.
Our correspondents reported deaths of three persons in Sherpur, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha in thunderbolt.
In Dhaka, the rain, which was supposed to bring a relief in city life amid heat, turned out to be a cause of miseries as their movement was badly hampered due to water-logging and traffic congestions.
When a major transport crisis grips the city, the evening rain intensified sufferings to the commuters. Many commuters were forced to huddle under the open sky during the rain.
Many roads of the capital were submerged by water due to the rain. The rain slowed down vehicular movement, leading to thin traffic on the roads.
Abdur Rahman Khan, an expert at the Met office, said heavy downpour is likely to continue in capital Dhaka and northern region of the country today and tomorrow.
“Besides, country’s northeastern regions will also experience heavy rain fall from April 20 to April 24,” he said, adding that a westerly low lies over West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh and it extends up to North Bay.
The evening rain yesterday left the traffic in a complete mess causing mmense sufferings to commuters. The commuters got stuck due to the incessant rain. The rain that started at about 6pm continued till filing of this report yesterday night. The downpour submerged most city streets and low-lying areas, creating traffic chaos all around.
Many areas like Pallabi, Motijheel, Mirpur-10, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Shantinagar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Moghbazar and Jatrabari went under water.
Vehicles were seen moving slowly on the streets and commuters got stuck in long tailbacks for hours together in different areas, including Mirpur, Rokeya Sharani, Airport Road and Tejgaon, Gulshan, Badda and Baridhara.
The country has been experiencing temperature between 36.6 degree Celsius and 21.5 degree Celsius over the last few days, according to the Met office.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) stopped ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia route since 6pm yesterday due to rough weather.
“We have suspended the ferry services from 6:00pm yesterday in order to avert any untoward incident,” said Mohammad Salahuddin, manager (commerce) BIWTA at Paturia office.
