Miscreants kill fish worth Tk 8 lakh by poisoning in farmer’s pond

Miscreants causes death to several thousand fishes worth about tk 8 lakh by pouring poison in a big pond named as Adorsha Motso Khamar on Monday night at Keshba village in Kishorganj upazila of the district.
Owner of the fish farm Shohrab Ali (55) said that he used to cultivate fish in one-acre pond in his farm for a long time and maintain family along with bearing educational expenses of his two sons and three daughters.
” This year I released 10 maund (1 maund= 40 kg) fish fry of different kinds of fishes like rui, katol, mrigel and curp varieties and expecting to get a good output within few months as took good care and used good quality fish feed,” he said.
In morning of today after saying Fazr prayer Shohrab went to the pond to give feed to the fishes, as it was his routine work.
“But to my horror, I noticed that several thousand dead fishes were floating on pond water and going near I smelt the irritating odour of poison,” Shohrab Ali said.
Noor Md. Sona Mia (23) eldest son of the affected fish farmer also an honours student of Nilphamari govt. college said, ” My father takes tk 3 lakh as loan from commercial banks and NGO and was expecting to get a profit this year but all our hopes end in smoke.”
His father Shohrab Ali in a chocked voice said” I’m now bewildered thinking how to repay my loan money with interest and how shall I bear educational expense of my children.”
He however couldn’t guess who might have killed the fishes, as he had no enemy in the area.
Upazila fishery officer Altab Hossain said, ” Shohrab is a govt. enlisted fish farmer and he visited his farm a number of times to provide him with suggestions.”
Regarding the matter, Shohrab filed a case with Kishorganj police station accusing unknown miscreants.
OC of Kishorganj police station Bozlur Rashid said that as per their primary investigation they suspected that thieves poured poison in the pond and when the affected fishes floated on water they collected big fishes leaving behind the small ones before escaping.
