Sufferings of thousands of city dwellers in greater Mirpur area reached a peak as they were unable to cook on Friday, the weekly holiday, when the relocation of underground gas pipelines for Dhaka Metrorail construction resulted in a gas link suspension for around 18 hours.
Titas Gas Distribution Company Limited earlier had announced that the gas link would be snapped from 10:00pm on Thursday to 8:00am on Friday for the metro rail construction. But they could not restore the gas link in many areas till 8:00 pm on Friday.
The sufferings were tremendous, according to the local people. Several residents were seen thronging nearby restaurants and fast food shops to have their lunch. Even, many residents could not have their breakfast for the gas crunch.
“A technical glitch in shifting the underground gas pipelines causes delay in restoration of the gas connection. It took some extra hours to complete the work,” said Baharul Haque, Zonal Officer of Titas Gas.
Control Room Officer of Titas Gas HM Islam said that the supply of gas to all areas would not restore before 10:00 pm of Friday.
However, gas connection restored at Journalists’ Housing Society at 2:30 pm and Mirpur -7 at 3:00pm. In several areas, there was no gas connection till the time of filing this report at 9:00pm yesterday.
Apart from household connections, gas connection
was also stopped at CNG Stations and industrial units in the greater Mirpur, which also curtailed the production.
Titas Gas officials said the areas that ran out of gas were: Mirpur 10 to Agargaon on both sides of road, Monipur, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Pirerbagh, Barobagh, Agargaon, Senpara Parbata, Ibrahimpur, North and South Kafrul, Taltola, Kachukhet, Kalyanpur, Shyamoli, Mirpur 1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, Mirpur Cantonment, Mirpur DOHS, Ahmed Nagar, Shah Ali Bagh, Kalshi, Pikepara, and both sides of 60-feet road.
A resident of Mirpur-6 Zahanara Begum said: “At first we thought that the gas connection will restore at 8:00am on Friday. So, I planned to prepare breakfast a little bit later. But finding no other way, I used kerosene stove for cooking to feed my children. The gas came after 3:00pm. What a misery!”
“As I failed to prepare breakfast in my house, I have to buy food from the nearby restaurants. Not only that, I went to restaurant again in the noon as it was not possible to prepare the lunch in the kitchen,” Milton Mia, another resident of Shyamoli, said.
