Minority leaders concerned over police attitude

Leaders of minority Buddhist community have expressed their anxiety over the current situation of the country. They also expressed severe annoyance over the police harassment by the law enforcement agencies during the special drive.
“I can’t forget that I’m a minority. As a member of small community, I’m in fear…. We’re afraid of secret killing and also, we fear police repression and harassment in the name of special drive,” Asim Ranjan Barua, President of Bangladesh Buddhist Federation said on Wednesday.  
He came up with the view during a meeting between 14-party alliance leaders, and Bangladesh Buddhist Federation and Bangladesh Christian Association at party president’s Dhanmondi office. “I do tell 14-party alliance, please stop your police. We think, police are doing much,” he said.
In reply, spokesperson of 14-party alliance Mohammad Nasim, who is also presidium member of Awami League, said, “We’ll take action if there is any specific compliant.”
Secretary General of Bangladesh Buddhist Federation Ashok Barua said: “Targeted killing is going on targeting people of religious minority…..We want social and political barrier around us. Hope, the 14-party will stay with us.”
Secretary General of Bangladesh Christian Association Nirmol Rozario said: “A vested quarter is trying to destabilize the government. For that reason, we’re anxious like as you.”
He pointed out that four people of Christian community so far have been killed by miscreants since January last. Awami League Joint General Secretaries Mahabubul Alam Hanif and Zahangir Kabir Nanak, Chairman of Tarikat Federation Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari, JSD President Sharif Nurul Ambia, and Communist Party leader Wazedul Islam Khan, among others, were present in the meeting.
