Budget 2022-23: Ministry to propose to increase allocation of Tk 3,000cr in power and energy sector

The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources is going to propose Tk 30,912 crore in the power and energy sector in the upcoming budget for 2022-23 Fiscal Year, which is Tk 3,428 crore more than the last financial year.
Reviewing the budget allocation proposal for power and energy sector in the upcoming financial year, it is seen that the government allocated Tk 27,484 crore in the current fiscal year 2021-22.
The government has given importance to the energy sector in the coming budget allocation considering the global energy crisis.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said that prices of energy products have gone up abnormally worldwide despite 100 per cent electrification.
The government is going to prepare the proposed budget for power and energy sector in the upcoming financial year considering the overall global situation, the State Minister said.
According to sources of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, the total allocation for the power sector has been proposed of Tk 27,711. 90 crore for the 2022-23FY and this allocation sought for 60 projects under the annual development program. Of this, Tk 9,408 crore is from government funds (GoB), Tk 3,572 crore from the company’s own funds and Tk 14,731.11 crore from project assistance (PA).
It is learned that nine projects out of 60 are totally new projects. Among the projects, five projects are under Petrobangla, two projects of Blue Economy Cell, one project of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and one project of Geological Survey Department (GSB).
On the other hand, the government has proposed to allocate Tk 3,201.27 crore in the upcoming 2022-23 financial year for the energy sector and this allocation has been sought for 39 projects in this sector under the annual development program. Of this, Tk 1,821.52 crore has been proposed from the government fund (GoB), Tk 1,029.9 crore for 24 projects with own funds and Tk 315.66 crore for gas development fund. Besides, Tk 35 crore will be proposed for block allocation for the energy sector.
Nasrul Hamid said, the government has already been able to ensure 100 per cent electrification this year and the big challenge now is to provide affordable and uninterrupted electricity to our customers to achieve the goal.
Fuel prices have gone up abnormally worldwide due to the Russia-Ukraine war, which has created direct impact in Bangladesh too. The energy division has decided to take preparation now to avoid future energy crises.
