The government has warned of tough legal actions against anyone caught driving on the wrong lane, even if the offender is a minister, an MP or a VIP.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader sounded the caution on Friday. “Everyone will have to face the same trial if found travelling on the wrong side of road, be it a minister, an MP or a VIP,” he said at a programme in Gazipur. Police had been instructed to sue any vehicle driving on the wrong side, he said.
Awami League Presidium Member Quader inaugurated an underpass on the
Chandra-Nabinagar Road in Shorabo in Gazipur’s Kashimpur on Friday.
He mentioned that driving on the wrong side of streets was a major cause behind chaotic traffic situation in Bangladesh. “I would not guarantee that the Eid holidaymakers’ journey back home will be completely hassle-free this time. However, I am trying my best to make their journey comfortable,” the minister told bdnews24.com. Ansars, rover scout, and community police have been deployed to help the Highway Police manage traffic during the Eid. The minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself was monitoring the traffic situation.
