NEPAL’S Law Minister Sher Bahadur Tamang resigned on Tuesday amid criticism from different quarters for his controversial statement involving girl medical students who are studying in Bangladesh. Landlocked Nepal is a very small hilly terrain of South Asia, 27 miles off the border, but has emerged as an unbowed nation after rejecting bordering India’s dominance in internal issues in 2016. The resignation of the Nepali minister for the controversial remark is stunning for us as in Bangladesh. This attitude usually is not practiced here.
The Nepali minister on July 20 said that Nepali girls who ‘are studying or have studied MBBS in Bangladesh were bound to compromise their honor to get their certificates’. Instantly, Bangladesh lodged a protest with Nepal against the statement. And Nepalese authorities on Tuesday informally informed the Bangladesh government about the resignation of minister Tamang.
Whereas what we see in Bangladesh — Finance Minister said totally ‘bogus’ about adulteration of gold in Bangladesh Bank vault. He said only 3kg out of the 963kg is adulterated. Earlier, he had said the looted money Tk 4,000 crore from state-owned banks was nothing. He not yet made public the investigation report on the heist from central bank reserve too. On extrajudicial killing, the Home Minister lament crocodile tear saying one or two faults may happen. Even the Prime Minister once announced cancellation of quota from government jobs and later rebuked her old stand. The self-contradictory and irresponsible remarks are common in our political culture, but Nepal’s not.
In contrast to the gravity of the remark, our Ministers, politicians, pro-government people and many other humiliate ordinary citizens, embezzle public money and trust, and even kill people extra-judicially but no one admits their responsibility. Consequently, the national pride and interest are being compromised and national integrity.
The culture of high political ethics pushed Nepal into a place where they dare to deny Indian interference and draw independent foreign policy. We must learn from Nepal.
