The ministers’ apartment project has become more expensive for the government, as the implementing agency placed a Tk 21.12 crore fresh proposal, exponentially 44 per cent above the original project cost.
The Public Works Department (PWD) recently sent the revised project proposal to the Planning Ministry with inclusion of several components.
It proposed extension of the project for one year along with fitting of foreign floor and wall tiles, sanitary wares, auto electric sensor, decorative curtain, specialized painting, civil and E/M decoration and procurement of foreign furniture for the under construction apartments.
Even, it proposed to procure three vehicles (one jeep and two motor bikes) for the project.
On March 3, 2015, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the Ministers’ Apartment-3 project at an estimated cost of Tk 47.75 crore.
“Several new components have been included in the proposal, which led to the cost escalation of the project cost. PWD also sought one more year to complete the project, which was scheduled to be completed in June 2018,” an official of the Planning Commission told The New Nation on Thursday on condition of anonymity.
The Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) of the Planning Commission on June 7 held a meeting to discuss the revised proposal, with
Commission Member Juena Aziz in the chair.
After elaborate discussion, opinion was given in the meeting that the structural and plaster of the six-storied building project have already been completed. It will be handed over after completion of finishing touch. At this moment, inclusion of new components and works will delay the project’s execution work and thereby it may not be possible to hand over the apartments within the current tenure of the incumbent government.
The revised project proposal, however, in question recommended for approval subject to the implementation of several decisions taken at the meeting.
The Ministry of Housing and Public Works initiated the project amid growing accommodation problems of the cabinet ministers.
On October 05, 2016, PWD started construction work of the six-storey apartment building (10 flats) on the Bailey Road in Dhaka. The size of each of the flats will be 5500 square feet.
