Kamruzzaman Bablu :
Religious Affairs Minister Principal Matiur Rahaman rejected the allegation of taking any illegal benefit from the agencies for allocating hajj quota this year.
The Minister rejected the charge at a press conference in his Secretariat office on Thursday.
Matiur Rahman said that legal action would be taken against the officials responsible for spreading fabricated allegation.
“The government is sincere and will not allow anyone to disturb the
Hajj management. Tougher action will follow him who dares disturb hajj management,” he said.
The Minister said that the government introduced a pass system for entering the hajj camp as part of security. He also said that some 1,01,778 pilgrims would go to Saudi Arabia this year to perform hajj. About 1,40,000 people registered their names under private arrangement against quota of 91,778 pilgrims.
But 5,200 only showed their interest to go to Saudi Arabia under government management against quota of 10,000. The Minister also noted that about 40,000 registered aspirants who will not be able to perform hajj this year would get priority next year, he added.
The Religious Affairs Ministry recently formed a Hajj Management and Monitoring Committee headed by Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Religious Affairs Ministry BH Haroon, while Ministry’s Joint Secretary Mir Nazrul Islam was made its member-secretary.
Besides, AKM Abdul Awal (Saidur Rahman), MP, and Ministry’s Additional Secretary Shahiduzzaman are members :of the committee. The other members are Minister’s Personal Secretary Abul Kalam Azad, Assistant Personal Secretary (APS) Shafiqul Islam and HAAB’s President Ibrahim Bahar, Secretary General Sheikh Md. Abdullah and Senior Vice-President Farid Ahmed Majumder.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Pilgrims and Hajji Welfare Council President Abdullah Al Naser in a statement urged the government to distribute the quota equally among 483 approved Hajj agencies entitled to send pilgrims this year.
BH Haroon, MP, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Religious Affairs Ministry, Ministry’s Joint Secretary Mir Nazrul Islam, HAAB’s President Ibrahim Bahar, Secretary General Sheikh Md. Abdullah and Senior Vice-President Farid Ahmed Majumder were also present among others in the press conference.
Meanwhile, a section of the Hajj agency owners claimed that an errant syndicate comprising the Religious Affairs Ministry officials and Hajj Agencies Association of Bangladesh (HAAB) leaders have been allocating blank pilgrims quota allocated for Bangladesh by taking illegal benefits this year. Ruhum Amin Mintu, Convener of HAAB Samannay Parishad told The New Nation on Thursday that HAAB leaders were taking Tk 30,000 to Tk 50,000 per head from the Hajj agencies intended to receive the quota.
They said that around 5,200 pilgrims registered their names for performing Hajj this year under government management against the quota of 10,000 allocated for government management while 86,000 against 91,758 pilgrims have completed their registration under private arrangement.
More than 10,000 quota from both management remained blank. Though the Saudi government has not yet agreed to transfer the government quota to the private arrangement, the members of the committee have started allocating the quota to the Hajj agencies, he claimed.
He also claimed that if such allocation of pilgrim’s quota continues, the government would fail to manage the Hajj of this year properly. It will damage our country’s image in abroad.
