Rotten wheat scandal: Minister comes under fire of JS body

Staff Reporter :The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food Ministry has expressed severe dissatisfaction over the scandalous publicity on ‘substandard’ Brazilian wheat imported by the ministry.An irked JS body also wanted to know from the ministry why such debate is going over the wheat? How and why such discussion began? The committee also asked the ministry to provide all necessary papers to know the details.The above decisions came at the 9th meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food Ministry held at Sangsad Bahabn chaired by committee President Md Abdul Wadud. Among others, Food Minister Quamrul Islam, Abdul Malek, Khandaker Abdul Baten, Sheikh Mohammad Nurul Hoque and Shirin Naim took part in the meeting.The committee directed the Food Ministry to produce clearance certificate for the imported wheat and lab reports in the next meeting. “We have asked them [Food Ministry] to provide all necessary papers to the committee. We will look after the matter. We want to know the reason why such debate initiated? Because, it creates impact on the government,” committee President Md Abdul Wadud said after the meeting. Clarifying the reason behind the inquiry, he also said, “Media plays a vital role in creating image of the government. So, we became concern when the matter was highly focused in the media. We are goving pressure on minister and DG of Food Directorate.””I don’t think the minister can avoid his responsibility as the DG Food works under the ministry. However, we have also demanded answer from the DG,” he said.
