State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Thursday formally announced Tk 8,000 as the minimum wages for Ready Made Garment (RMG) workers.
“The new wage structure will come into effect from December,” the Minister made the announcement after a meeting at the Ministry office in Dhaka in the afternoon.
Ministry of Labour and Employment formed the wage board for the garment workers in January of this year to avert unrest.
As per the previous wage board, the RMG workers are being paid Tk 5,300 as the minimum monthly salary.
Chunnu said 51 percent salary was hiked from the previous wage structure and all the RMG workers will get Tk 8,000 as minimum monthly salary from December.
