The mills under the purview of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) earned Tk 484.48 crore and spent around Tk 3,652.94 crore in the last financial year.
Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi said this responding to a query made by Member of Parliament from the Rangpur-1 constituency Mashiur Rahaman Ranga during question-answer session in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) on Thursday.
Of BJMC’s 25 jute mills, he said, 24 are closed and one is running on rental basis.
Of the 24 closed mills, two mills are being used to set up ‘Textile Palli’ and another two mills will be handed over to Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and the process is undergoing, he added.
Responding to another question from Member of Parliament Habib Hasan, he said currently, there are 589 weaving factories and one lakh 16 thousand and 117 units in the country as per the Census 2018.
