Selim Reza with Tanvir Ahammed, Sirajganj :
In the forthcoming 11th parliamentary election, the potential candidates of various parties have already started campaign and trying to get nomination from their respective parties including Awami League and BNP in electoral seat of Sirajganj-2.
This constituency consists of one municipality and six unions of Sadar Upazila including Kamarkhanda upazila. From the political point of view this constituency has much importance.
Here the main competition will be between BNP and AL; Jamaat is also in the battle field of election. Candidates of Jatiya Party, CPB, Jashad, Bashad are also dynamic in election campaign. Despite the internal conflict between two major parties, BNP has recently tried to overcome it through conference with grassroots leaders and activists but there is a dispute in AL till now. However, the current MP of Sirajganj-2 tried to tackle internal conflicts though extensive development activities but there is no alternative to resolving dispute for crossing election brim.
After the change of 90’s plot, BNP’s candidate late Mirza Moradduzam won at first election from this constituency in 1991. Later on BNP’s chairperson Khaleda Zia, who won from this electoral seat in the controversial poll of 1996.Then AL’s presidium member Nasim emerged as victorious in the election that held after four month later. In 2001, BNP’s Iqbal Hasan Tuku was elected as MP for this constituency. Because of legal difficulties, he could not take part in the vote of 2008 but his wife, Rumana Mahmud, Senior Vice-president of district BNP won the election from Sirajganj-2. At that time AL candidate Jannat Ara Henry was defeated by about 2000 vote. After then, Habib-E-Millat , Acting General Secretary of District AL, won the controversial vote in 2014. Millat, is only the strong candidate of AL from this electoral seat in upcoming election.
Meanwhile, the division in BNP began with the vote of 2001. After the formation district committee in 2008, this division became more vigorous. Although the party has been trying to overcome the disunion by announcing a new committee recently but several veteran leaders were kept outside from the new committee. Due to this there prevails a substandard state among the leaders and activists who are deprived. The joining of numerous leaders and activists of BNP in AL is only the echoes of this outrage. But the leader from high command says, there is no division in BNP. People are united to protect the country from the oppressed government. If there is a fair election, BNP’s victory is must.
Noor-E Alam Helal, former organizing secretary of district BNP and elected mayor as twice is excepting to get nomination from here. In addition to the present MP, Jannat Ara Henry, General Secretary of central women’s AL is also in the list to get nomination. In 2011, the PM Hasina gave Millat the responsibility of the coordinator of district development implementation committee. With that procedure, his debut transpires in the local AL. After, becoming MP in 2014 without being competing, he betrothed himself in various development activities of his polling area. With merit, skill, honesty and competence; he took the place in the heart of general mass indeed. He placed the sings of development in various field in this constituency, among them reopened of Quoyomi Jute Mills, which was closed during coalition government, changing of the course of Jamuna river through capital dredging project including establishment of National Heart Foundation at Sirajganj are mostly mentionable. He has also made an extensive development in communication sector. After the death of the general secretary of the district unit AL, he gets the responsibility of acting general secretary. Now he has been massively engaged in mass contact due to upcoming election. Party members in different level say, Millat is the dreamer of modern Sirajganj. Nobody could do so much development in Sirajganj after independence. So, there is no alternative to Millat in this constituency.
Another AL’s candidate Jannat Ara, who is well-publicized in the field of political, social and educational sectors, also hoping for nomination. She expressed her optimism saying, victory is sure if I get an opportunity to take part in election under the banner of boat.
BNP’s heavyweight candidate, former power minister and vice president of BNP’s central committee Tuku and his wife are also on the field of election. Tuku controlled district BNP’s politics in one single hand. If he will not be able to participate in upcoming election due to legal complications like 2008, in that case his wife will take part in election. Local BNP members think, it is possible to restore this electoral seat under the leadership of Rumana Mahmud.
Besides, Major (Retd) Hanif, who is the executive member of central BNP, Nur-e Alam, the former organizing secretary of district BNP and former mayor are also hoping for BNP’s nomination. Hanif established several educational institutions here. To ensure party’s nomination in upcoming election, he spending busy time making mass communication to the grassroots leaders and workers. He says, if nomination is made on the opinion of public poll, I will be nominated and it will be possible to restore this electoral seat. Nur-e Alam is also passing busy time wiyh the hope of nomination.
On the other hand, Aminul Islam, who is organizing secretary of central committee and president of JP, comrade Sabuj who is the General Secretary of district CPB, Abu Bakar, central member of Jashad, Nobo Kumar, District Coordinator of Bashad are working on the field with leader and workers of their own party with the hope of getting nomination.
Aminul Islam said, with hope, I’m actively engaged with politics from my student life.AL betrayed me in 2008 when I was nominated from the grand alliance; another candidate from AL was given against me. However, he is hoping for the nomination and is hopeful of the victory.
