Deepak Chowdhury back from Madaripur :
Buffaloes have been playing an important role in national milk production. The contribution of buffalo milk in India, Pakistan and Nepal is 58%; 63% & 74% respectively whereas in Bangladesh it is only 4%. So there is a huge scope to increase milk production by developing our native buffalo and rearing dairy buffaloes.
Buffalo’s milk is rich in fat but less cholesterol. Intramuscular Fat is low in Buffalo meat in comparison to cattle and goat. So if we want to achieve the requirement of animal protein as SDG, Buffalo will be an important option.
Considering the importance of buffalo, Local Government., Rural Development & Cooperative Ministry took a pilot project titled “Establishment of Buffalo Breeding Station for Enhancing Milk Production” which was implemented by Milkvita.
Project cost was 18.23 crore. Through this project 200 ‘Murrah’ milking buffaloes with calf was imported from Haryana, India by custom channel via Pertapole-Benapole Land Port for the first time after Tk 5.6 cr.
According to sources, most difficult jobs were to obtain Indian government permission which took almost two years and the transportation of the animals from Haryana, which is about 2500 Km up to Milk Vita Farm.
Chairman of Milk Vita Sheikh Nadir Hossain Lipu said, Murrah Buffalo farm can bring new speed in milk production in this country and new breeds could be good source of nutrition.
This step have become very popular by the current government, which aims at creating jobs and increasing income among the marginalised.
Milkvita established two mother farms in Takerhat, Madaripur and Raipur, Laxmipur consisting 100 milking buffalo each.
Murrah buffalo produces 1800-2400 kg milk per 305 days lactation. They are very docile and habituated in intensive farming. The goal of the project is to popularise dairy Murrah buffalo to cooperative farmers along with their existing cattle. Due to high butter fat (7.5%) farmers will get around 70 taka per litre of buffalo milk. If buffalo produce 8-10 ltr milk it will be equal to 2.5 ltr cow milk. Buffaloes are very environment friendly hardy animals.
In Takerhat Murrah Buffalo farm each buffalo is producing 7.5 liters of milk daily including suckling calf. After adjusting feeding, management & environment these Murrah buffaloes will produce 10 litres in future.
Milkvita played an important role to develop cattle in milk vita areas by supporting their members through artificial insemination by High yielding exotic semen. Now Milkvita had taken the responsibility to devlop genetic makeup of our untouched native buffaloes.
Milkvita’s Managing committee played crucial role to take and implement developmental projects for the betterment of the country.
