Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque on Sunday said militant groups do not have any heavy arms with which to stand against law enforcers.
“As explosives are available, militants are using those but they don’t have heavy arms,” said the IGP while talking reporters after the opening session of a 2-week long international workshop on ‘Transnational Crimes: Saarc perspective’ at the Police Staff College in the city.
He said the militants have bomb-making manuals from which they make explosives after taking primary training. “They collect explosive substances from inside the country and in the past they collected gels from abroad for making explosives.”
But now it is not possible to bring gels from outside the country due strict vigilance of the law enforcers, the IGP claimed. “We’re working to stop sourcing of explosive substances inside the country,” he added.
Replying to a question, he said the law enforcers could not arrest the militants alive as they killed themselves by blasting suicide bombs.
Responding to another question about the number of militant dens across the country, the IGP said they have no accurate list of militant hideouts. Members of the law enforcement agencies carry out anti-militant drive instantly when they detect a militants’ den or hideout, he said.
He urged the country’s people to help the law enforcers as it is not possible for them alone to root out militants from the country.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan was present as the chief guest at the inaugural session of the international training course. A total of 18 participants, including two each from Bhutan, Maldives, Sri Lanka and India, have been participating in the training programme.
