Speakers at a workshop in the city called upon all to work together to build a militancy-free non-communal country along with alleviating poverty, stopping women and child repression and removing gender disparity to attain UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The ministry for women and children affairs organized the workshop at BIAM auditorium in the city on Tuesday to formulate action plans for implementation of SDGs. The participants said Bangladesh has already earned global acclaims by attaining several targets of UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
They hoped that the country would be able to attain the SDGs too.
Presided over by Secretary of Ministry for Women and Children Affairs Nasima Begum, the workshop was attended by Planning Commission Member Senior Secretary Dr. Shamsul Alam as special guest. Secretaries and other officials of different ministries and agencies were present.
Shamsul Alam said Bangladesh has achieved many of the MDGs between 2005 and 2015. Referring to success in poverty reduction and maternal mortality rate reduction, he said there will be no poor in the country after 2030.
The secretary said the rate of school dropout declined in the country by 80 percent and the government is working to stop it completely.
Nasima Begum said the proper implementation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s women development policy can ensure overall development in the country, including the welfare of women and children.
The speakers said the number of female students has increased in school and the number of female workers increased to 18 percent from only 1 percent 2009.
Currently, about 4 lakh women are working abroad, they said.
