There has been a rapid rise of active mobile internet connections in the country. It crossed the milestone of seven crore active users in Bangladesh by the end of April this year.
‘Very few countries in the world have touched such milestone of internet connections. It means our country achieved amazing success in information technology. So it is a great step towards building a digital Bangladesh’ said Shahjahan Mahmood, Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
According to BTRC data, around 44.5 percent people of the country are using internet by different service providers. Of them 93.69 percent of the total connections are from mobile network, 6.17 percent through the internet service providers (ISPs) and only 0.14 percent through WiMAX, which is available in few cities, said the data.
As per operators data sent to BTRC, some six crore 74 lakh SIM users are connected through mobile phones. But there is no separate information about 2G or 3G. There are 44 lakh 40 thousand users who have been connected through Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
According to telecom operators, 3G has made significant contribution to the mobile phone internet service in terms of connectivity.
Sources said, the two WiMAX operators Banglalion and Qubee have 45,551 and 36,559 active internet users respectively. State-owned landline operator Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) has 21,021 internet connections. The milestone has been achieved in April.
But by the end of May, this number reached around seven crore 19 lakh 56 thousand. In February last, BTRC the officially released subscribers number, where it showed there are six crore 72 lakh 45 thousand internet users in the country.
Recently, the Telecommunication Department informed the Parliament that the country has seven crore 969 lakh active internet connections till April this year. But BTRC officially did not disclose any information in May.
Earlier, in March last year, the country reached the milestone of six million internet connections. Internet connections reached five crore in July, 2015. Approximately 400 Gbps bandwidth are being used in conjunction with all these connections. Last year, the use of total internet data was 163 Gbps.
The Internet came late to Bangladesh with connectivity in 1996. In the last few years it grew dramatically, although obviously from a very low base. With an estimated user base of around 500,000 in early 2006, representing only a 0.35 percent penetration, the local Internet industry is preparing to move into the next stage of its development.
