People panicked: Mild quake jolts Ctg

A mild earthquake that jolts Chittagong, Rangamati, Bandarban, cox’s Bazar districts of last morning was severely felt by the people and triggered huge panic among the city residents. The jolt of the tremor was felt at 6:27am yesterday, Chitagong Met office sources said.
Though the magnitude of the earthquake was measured 4.7 in the Richter scale but the city people felt it severely as its epicentre was very near the port city.
The quake’s epicentre was Manikchharhi, 21 kilometres southeast of Khagrhachharhi hill district and 22 kilometres north-northeast from Raozan upazila of Chittagong district. Being panicked , the city dwellers came out from their residences, eye witnesses sources said. The city dwellers who were asleep after Shehri in the month of the holy Ramadan screamed with heavy rattling speedily came out from their respective houses. The tremor shock spilled out on the streets in port city as well. It caused people to run screaming for open ground, seeking divine intervention for their safety.
“I was awaken from sleep as my bed was oscillating and even my wife also telling about the tremor and we came out hurriedly from the second floor of my quarter, said Mohammad Ishaque a retired government officer and resident of Mehedibag government colony.
Abbas Uddin Chowdhury of Agrabad Commercial area said the earthquake flipped him off the couch like a coin. Fire service officials told that the city dwellers felt the earthquake that caused huge panic but they received no report of any causality.
