A mild heatwave currently sweeping a vast region of Bangladesh may continue some more days, meteorologists say.
Meteorologist Omar Faruq told this news agency the hot weather system that set in at the end of the Bengali month of Baishakh pushed the temperature to 36.6 degrees Celsius in Jessore on Friday.
It’s a slight drop in temperature from Thursday’s highest 37.2 degrees Celsius, also recorded in Jessore.
“An unbearably hot weather system is in place since the end of Baishakh,” said Omar Faruq. This is the third heatwave of the season.
He said, the heatwaves was sweeping over Faridpur, Madaripur, Satkhira, Rangamati, Maizdicourt, Feni, Rajshahi, Khulna, Mongla, Jessore, Barisal, Khepuparha and Bhola.
“It may continue for a few more days,” he said.
However, some places in Rangpur, Khulna and Sylhet have also experienced light to moderate rain, according to the Met office.
Omar Faruq said, rains might help temperature drop in some places, but the ‘irritating’ hot weather is not going away soon.
“The temperature may rise again in the third week of the current month. A mild heatwave may start at that time,” he said. In May’s weather forecast, the Met Office said one or two extreme heatwaves might affect the north and north-western zone while two or three mild heat waves might sweep other parts of the country during this month.
Mild heat wave occurs when the mercury rises to 36-38 degrees Celsius while a medium heat wave is marked with the temperature around 40 degrees Celsius.
In meteorological term, a severe heat wave occurs when the temperature goes beyond 40 degrees Celsius.
