Historic Mijibnagar Day was observed in Barisal with paying tributes to the portraits of the leaders, martyrs of liberation war and gatherings of freedom fighters.
Participants at the programmes demanded speedy trial and capital punishments of the war criminals.
Barisal city and district Awami League and its front organisation leaders paid floral tributes to the portrait of Bangabandhu at Sohel Square and organised a discussion meeting on the day at the party office on Friday morning.
It was addressed among others by Adv Talukdar Md. Yunus, district AL secretary and lawmaker, Jubunnessa Afroj.
District administration also organised a discussion meeting and cultural function on Friday evening at Ashwini Kumar Hall to observe the day.
A gathering of freedom fighters and their family members organised at the Garuria School ground of Bakerganj upazila on Friday morning.
Upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad arranged the programme presided over by Abdul Kader, upazila Muktijoddha Sangsad commander.
It was participated by more than one thousand freedom fighters and their family members.
Among others Sheikh Qutubuddin, district Muktijoddha Sangsad commander, Md. Gaus, freedom fighter and divisional commissioner, Mokhlesur Rahman, Barisal city unit Muktijoddha Sangsad commander, addressed the programme.
They said a day after the government was formed in Mujibnagar on this day of 1971; the world came to know that a government of a nation engaged in liberation war had been formed.
The skilled leadership of the ‘government in exile’ won the war within nine months, which gave birth to the new nation on Dec 16, 1971.
Chapainawabganj Correspondent reports: Mujibnagar Day was observed in Chapainawabganj on Friday.
A colourful rally was arranged by the Chapainawabganj district administration. It was brought out from the deputy commissioner’s office in the morning on the occasion. After parading the main roads of the town the rally ended at the same venue. After the rally, a discussion meeting was held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner.
It was held with the additional deputy commissioner (General) Maksuda Begum Siddiqua in the chair and was addressed among others, by deputy commissioner Mohammad Jahangeer Kobir as chief guest, police super Bashir Ahmed, commander of Chapainawabganj district unit of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Sirajul Islam and others.
BSS from Rajshahi adds : Historic Mujibnagar Day, April 17 in 1971, when Bangladesh government-in-exile took oath at Baidyanathtala mango grove in Meherpur, in the then Kushtia district was observed here on Friday.
A discussion meeting was held at the conference hall of the deputy commissioner (DC) of Rajshahi with DC Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury in the chair.
Speakers at the discussion meeting paid glowing tributes to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four other national leaders who contributed immensely to the liberation war of Bangladesh.
They recalled the events of the day when the exiled leaders took the most momentous decision of forming a legal government to draw global attention to the ongoing War of Liberation.
The formation of the government with Syed Nazrul Islam as acting president in the absence of Bangabandhu along with Tajuddin Ahmed as Prime Minister at Baiddyanathtala, later renamed Mujibnagar, was a great leap forward towards achieving the independence, the discussants said.
The meeting was addressed, among others, by Additional deputy commissioner (General) Jakir Hossain, former city mayor advocate Abdul Hadi, Deputy Commissioner of RMP Tanvir Haider Chowdhury and Freedom Fighters Dr Abdul Mannan and Advocate Matiur Rahman.

On the occasion, a big colourful rally was brought out by the district administration which started from the deputy commissioner’s office premises and ended at the district Shilpakala Academy after parading different roads of the town. A discussion meeting was also held at the conference hall of the deputy commissioner (DC) with DC Mukesh Chandra Biswas in the chair.
Parliamentary Standing Committee chairman of the Water Resources Ministry Ramesh Chandra Sen, MP, addressed the discussion as the chief guest while superintendent of police Abdur Rahim Shah Chowdhury, administrator of district council Sadeque Qureshi and vice president of District Awami League Advocate Mokbul Hossain Babu were present as special guests.
BSS from Mymensingh adds: The historic Mujibnagar Day was observed here with a call for building ‘Sonar Bangla’ to make the country free from hunger and poverty, as dreamt by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
That government led by acting President Syed Nazrul Islam and Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad had conducted War of Liberation proclaimed by Bangabandhu.
Marking the day, Mymensingh district administration arranged a discussion and cultural function at Shilpakala Academy this morning. Deputy Commissioner Mustakim Billah Faruqui addressed it as the chief guest while additional deputy commissioner Abdul Ahad presided.
