Migratory birds start arriving in Baikka Beel

Migratory birds have started flocking to Baikka Beel of Srimangal in Moulvibazar, the biggest lake in the country, delighting visitors with their chirping and fluttering.
Birds of different species have come earlier this year and their number is also more than last year, bird watchers said.
 A team led by Paul Thampson, Adviser of Crel Project conducted the survey and organised by Bangladesh Birds Club and funded by Crel project (USAID’s Climate-Resilient Ecosystems and Livelihoods (CREL) Project) said Majharul Islam Zahangir, Regional coordinator Crel Project (USAID’s Climate-Resilient Ecosystems and Livelihoods (CREL) Project). He said, the survey was conducted at Baikka Beel area . Baikka Beel comprising 1000 hectares is spread over Srimangal upazila in Moulvibazar.
Every winter, thousands of guest birds of new species from Siberia and other colder regions flock to the haor. They include Bright King-duck, Rose King-duck, Bali-haas, Lenja, Chity, Sorali, Boikal, Nilshir-Piyan, Pantamukhi, Pankouri, Buti-duck, China, Rangamuri, Black-duck, Peributhi, Chokchoki, Giria, Khonjona, Patari, Dolpipi, Water-hen, North-giria, Dahuk, Patibatan, Common-chill, Cotton-chill, Gergini, Cottontail, Pintail and Toughed-duck.
Majharul Islam Jahangir said quating Paul Thampson, Adviser of Crel Project after a survey in January 22-23, 2016 this year told this correspondent that they counted This year 38 species of migratory and native aquatic birds got baikka beel. There are 16 species of migratory birds and twenty two species of native water birds which was declared a sanctuary for birds and fishes in 2003.
This year, a total of 8,832 migratory and native birds have been counted in the water. Last year, 6,991 birds stayed in baikka beel.
According to the bird survey report, 2005 counted, 1 thousand 174 birds, 2006 comes in 6,949, 2007 comes 7,204, 2008 comes 6,429, 2009 comes 9,405, 2010 comes 12,250, 2011 comes 5,989, 2012 comes 3,964, 2013 comes 7,499, 2014 comes 10,479 several species of migratory birds comes baikka beel.
They also found aquatic birds of four new species during the survey in the beel. They were Falcated Duck, Gray Leg Goose, Northern Lapwing and Common Shell Duck.
Bashir Ahmed, a wildlife consultant said, guest’s birds were comming depended on three ways. One is disturbence or undisturbance, 2nd is climate change & last is Fly way.
Mazharul Islam Jahangir, regional coordinator of CREL project, said, “We have planted Palmyra seeds here so that birds can make their nests and increase their population naturally. For the last several years we have been working here, and in the meantime, we have also planted many other trees suitable for birds.”
