Staff Reporter :
A violent storm battered capital Dhaka as elsewhere across the country with torrential showers and high winds killing five people, destroying many houses, damaging crops, uprooting trees, hindering traffic movement and inundating many low laying areas on midnight Monday.
At least five storm-related deaths were reported, with one victim crushed by a falling tree in Narail while another following collapse of a tin-shed roof of a house in Gaibandha district.
Besides, two fishermen drowned and one remained missing as a fishing boat capsized in the River Meghna during storm in Laxmipur district. Another victim, a shopkeeper was killed when a billboard collapsed on him during the storm in Bogra district.
Several hundred thatched houses were reportedly damaged and hundreds of trees uprooted in the districts during the storm.
The wind blew at a speed of between 74 and 83 kilometres per hour also snapping power lines and TV cables in many places of the country. The rain created water-logging in the low-lying areas.
More rain and storm are likely to occur across the country today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday), an official of Met Office said.
The Met office says trough of westerly low lies over West Bengal and adjoining areas, which extends up to North Bay.
Rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary squally wind is likely to occur at a few places over Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Rangpur, Khulna and Barisal divisions, it added. In Capital Dhaka, most areas were inundated as torrential rains also pounded during the storm. The Met Office recorded 49mm of rain in the capital.
Traffic almost came to a standstill after the storm at midnight on Monday in the busy areas like Banani, Staff Road, Khilkhet, Airport Road, Gulistan, Farmgate, Mouchak, Moghbazar, Gulshan, Zigatola, Dhanmondi and many other areas.
Though the rain stopped by 2:00 in the night, water from many inundated areas did not recede quickly. The fallen trees and submerged vehicles also added salt into the wounds.
Besides, city’s most roads were jammed with long lines as idled cars waited for waist-deep water to recede. As many vehicles went out of order, commuters waded their way home through knee-deep water or waited for hours to get transport.
About 50 trees were uprooted during the storm in the city.
Two people were injured when a tree in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) fell on a pick-up van driving along the road under Tejgaon police station during the night’s storm.
The rainwater submerged roads in Mirpur-10, Shenpara-Parbata and Kazipara, Rokeya Sarani, Airport Road, Bijoysharani, Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Kakrail, Sabujbagh, Khilgaon, Merul Badda, Rampura, Motijheel, Shyampur and Demra.
Moreover, the Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover construction site tormented the travelers most.
Commuters are facing unbearable miseries while travelling through roads connecting Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Eskaton, Dilu Road, Siddheshwari, Shatrasta and Rampura due to the construction work as the roads are riddled with huge potholes.
A large number of cars and motorcycles were shifted off road after receiving technical faults due to heavy rain, which affected the city badly.
In Laxmipur, two fishermen drowned and one remained missing as a fishing boat capsized in the River Meghna during storm early Tuesday morning.
The dead were identified as Awlad Hossain, 40, and Mahe Alam, 45. Both hailed from Balur Char village in Ramgati upazila.
The missing fisherman is identified as Helal Uddin of Char Daktar in the same upazila.
Police and local people said the trio went to the Meghna for fishing. Their boat was caught by strong wind early in the morning and capsized, leaving two drowned and one missing.
Ramgati thana OC M Iqbal Hossain said bodies of two dead fishermen were recovered and handed over to their families.
