BSS, Dhaka :
In order to accelerate the economic progress of the country, leading economists at a conference on Tuesday stressed the need for expansion of microfinance aiming to make the people self-reliant flourishing their human potentials.
If common people particularly poor sections are given microfinance facilities, they will make better contribution to economy by turning themselves into efficient workforces, they told the first session of the two-day conference at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) here.
Institute of Microfinance (INM) is organizing the conference on “Inclusive finance in Bangladesh.”
Member of general body of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) Munshi Foiz Ahmed presided over the session titled “Empowerment is the Key to Poverty Eradication and Human Dignity: Lessons and Perspectives from the ENRICH Program in Bangladesh.”
While making the keynote presentation, INM Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad said, “Most people in our country cannot utilize their talent and capabilities due to their financial hardship. Microfinance can help these people to make themselves more self-sufficient, which will eventually contribute to the economic process of the country.”
Poverty is a multi-dimensional problem, he said adding, “We have to address poverty considering its multi-dimensional aspects…People must be given health, education and training facilities for their human development, which will help eliminate poverty.”
Since 1904, the concept of microfinance started to get popularity as a successful poverty alleviation method, other speakers said, adding more than 100 years later, now it is being used as an effective mechanism to cut poverty of poor and ultra-poor people.
Bangladesh has made commendable progress in alleviating poverty and hunger as it is maintaining excellent economic growth over the last two decades, they said, adding it needs to ensure equal economic opportunities for all to ensure sustainable development.
