Eight tenders will be floated next year for various construction works of metro rail in Dhaka, the road transport minister has said.
The Tk 220 billion project would be divided in eight ‘contract packages (CP)’ for easy implementation, said Obaidul Quader on Wednesday.
CP-1 and CP-2 will be for building and developing train depots. The construction of the 20.1 km-long track and 16 stations will be encompassed under CP-3, CP-4, CP-5 and CP-6.
CP-7 and CP-8 will be for developing electro mechanical system and rolling stock.
“From January next year we’ll start inviting bids and the deals will be signed within 2016,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, some foreign newspapers reported that a British architecture firm John McAslan had been given the work to design the metro stations.
But the minister said, “They gave us a proposal but no contract has been signed with them.”
Earlier, Metrorail Project Director Md Mofazzal Hossain told this agency that the project’s ‘detailed design’ would be finalized before July next year.
The government hopes to complete the project by 2019.
RAJUK, the capital development authorities, have handed over 5.69 hectares out of the total 22 hectares of land required for the metro rail depots.
“The work is on to hand over the rest,” said Quader. The construction of Metrorail Line-7, a 36 km long track from Purbachol to Narayanganj will also be started while construction work for line-6 is already underway.
“We’re getting ready to build Metrorail line-7. It will connect Purbachal, Badda, Kamalapur and Narayanganj. The government plans to build another line for the Metrorail,” the minister said while refusing to elaborate more.
Each of the 56 trains in the proposed mass transit system will carry 1,800 passengers and will run every four minutes to transport 60,000 people every hour.
The 16 Metrorail stations will be Uttara (North), Uttara (Centre), Uttara (South), Pallabi, IMT, Mirpur 10, Kazipara, Taltala, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Sonargaon, National Museum, Doel Chattar, Bangabandhu National Stadium and Bangladesh Bank.
The tracks will run above the middle of roads and each train will take less than 40 minutes to run the whole distance. JICA, the agency that coordinates development assistance for the government of Japan, will provide Tk 165.95 billion for the mass transit system, approved by ECNEC in 2012. Bangladesh government will take care of the remaining Tk 53.90 billion.
