Syed Shemul Parvez :
The last stoppage of the Metro Rail is being built in front of the Kamalapur railway station in the capital without demolishing the iconic architectural building of railway station. The design complication over building the Metro Rail station is reportedly over.
This is occurred due to the objection of the Railway authorities.
The concerned people, however, think that this interconnection will speed up the railway activities.
Earlier, the Metro Rail work was started from Uttara to Motijheel under MRTA Line-6.
Later it was extended to Kamalapur railway station following the special instructions of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. But, the design had created different obstacles.
The last station, the shunting point of the Metro Rail has been fixed on the north side of Kamalapur railway station, which is covered under the infrastructure of the main railway station at Kamalapur.
Besides, it also clashed with plans to build a hub around the station.
Abdul Baki , official of Metro Rail Line-6 said that due to the objection of the railways, it has been decided to change the design of the last station of the metro rail with moving the shunting point to the south side.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways said that after the design revision, there was no clash but coordination.
Metro Rail has nothing to do with the plan to demolish the Kamalapur railway station and build a new one, says the Railway Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujon.
Notable that the work of Metro Rail from Uttara to Motijheel is already visible but the authorities have not yet started any work from Motijheel to Kamalapur station portion.
Earlier, the BR and the DMTCL, the implementing authority of the country’s first Metro Rail, were locked in a dispute over the extended design of the MRT-6 Line.
The MRT-6 Line was initially designed as an elevated line from Uttara to Motijheel. In 2019, the DMTCL planned to stretch the MRT-6 Line directly to the railway station following a PM directive.
Officially known as Dhaka Railway Station, it is now the central and the largest rail station of Bangladesh which unveiled on July 27, 1968. The iconic parabolic umbrella structure at Kamalapur was designed by Daniel Dunham and Robert Boughey.
