Preity Zinta has apologised for her views on the #MeToo movement during an interview with a Bollywood website. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the actor claimed that despite being a supporter of the movement, her comment was taken out of context.
“My reason for saying ‘I wish something like this would have happened to me’ in the film industry with a smile was because I would have reacted and slapped the person. So, it never happened and much later when it happened, I did react & the whole world saw it. Having said that, I recognize that not everyone is in a position to fight back and I don’t want to marginalize the women that have been abused,” Preity said in a statement.
Preity also clarified her “Sweetu and #MeToo” comment, which had left many furious. The actor had said in the interview, “Though I heard a line – aaj ki Sweetu kal ki MeToo ho sakti hai (Today’s Sweetu can become tomorrow’s Me Too). So don’t hang out with any Sweetu.”
Clarifying her stance, Preity in her statement said, “The Sweetu & MeToo comment was not mine but I was quoting a man, which implied that men are now cautious in their approach to women at work. The reason I was smiling in the interview was because it’s an interview & I was doing movie promotions.”
