Sylhet Bureau :
The Meteorology Department will complete setting up of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in 18 upazilas in four districts of Sylhet division. The work will be completed by the end of the current fiscal, an official said on Wednesday.
In-charge of Sylhet regional Met office, Senior Meteorologist Sayeed Ahmed Chowdhury told this correspondent that under a national project, 18 modern observation centres named AWS would be set up in the division. The sites were selected months ago and these had already been made over to the Meteorology Department recently, the official said.
However, there are two such installations at the Osmani International Airport and on the Sylhet Met office premises. The stations would help collect various weather information as well as cloud detection towards lightning, the official said.
Establishment of these stations are very important since there had been casualties of people from lightning in rural areas especially poor and marginal farmers in the country during the monsoon in last few years, the official informed further. The highest deaths were reported from haor region in Sunamganj and Habiganj districts.
Sunamganj district is considered most vulnerable for the calamity. The department has also identified the highly lightning-prone upazilas, he added.
Of the stations, three in Habiganj district would be set up at Nabiganj, Madhabpur and at Habiganj Sadar upazila while three in Moulvibazar — Barlekha, Kulaura and Sadar.
In Sunamganj, six stations will be set up at Chhatak, Jamalganj, Derai, Shulla, Tahirpur and Sadar upazilas and six in Sylhet district’s Golapganj, Beanibazar, Zakiganj, Kanaighat, Companiganj and Jaintapur upazilas. However, main server of these stations would be set at the Sylhet Met office in the city’s Shahi Eidgah area.
