Mercantile Bank Limited (MBL) one of the country’s leading banks in the private sector, acheived 59.86 per cent growth of net profit (after tax) in the last calendar year (2016).
The bank earned Tk 2,22736 million in 2016, which was Tk 1,393.28 million in 2015.
Besides, MBL’s total asset was Tk 204,127.47 million with a growth of 11.65 per cent in 2016, while its shareholder equity was Tk 16,810 million with a growth of 8.35 per cent, Deposit was Tk 165,257.45 million with a 7.70 per cent growth, while loan and advance was 150,912.52 with a 19.45 per cent growth.
 Moreover, the MBL has earned a Tk 325 crore profit in the last six months of the just-concluded fiscal year (2016-17). The amount od deposit during the period was Tk 20,279 crore and the bank sanctioned loans and advance of Tk 17,899 crore. In the last fiscal year, MBL had opened letters of credit (LCs) for exporting goods worth Tk 6,538 crore and import LCs for Tk 9,229 crore. The total flow of remittance through the bank was Tk 1,206 crore.
The disclousers came at a press meet on celebration of its 18th anniversary held on Monday at the MBL head office in the city.
The MBL announced that it would honour seven individuals, three organizations and a village with the ‘Mercantile Bank Achievement Award 2017’ for outstanding contribution and performance to the country, at a programme today (Tuesday).
MBL Chairman Sahidullah Ahsan, CEO Kazi Moshiur Rahman, Vice-Chairman AKM Sahid Reza, Director Akram Hossain, ASM Firoz Alam, Mosharaf Hossain, Additional Managing Director Md Kamrul Islam Chowdhury and other higher officials of the bank were present.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed will attend as chief guest,while Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir is expected to remain present as special guest at the award giving ceremony at International Convention City, Bashundhara in the city today (Tuesday).
Since 2002, ‘Maercantile Bank Award’ has been launched.
Speaking on the occasion Sahidullah Ahsan said that beyond banking service MBL is strongly devoted to serve the humanity and social development as part of its corporate social responsibilities (CSR), which was introduced by its founder late Abdul Jalil who founded ‘Mercantile Bank Foundation’.
He also promised better banking services in the future.
” We are selling our services at low cost and gaining higher profit by providing more benefit to its depositors and customers,” Ahsan added.
The individuals selected for Mercantile Bank Award this year included Mahfidul Haq (Research on Freedom Fighting), Poet Asad Chowdhury (Bengali language and literature), Chhayanot (Culture), Dr Sayed Anwar Hossain (Education), Dr Samonto Lal Sen (Medical Tratment), Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury (Journalism), Dr Debopriyo Bhatracharjo (Economy and Economic Research) and Salahuddin Alamgir (CIP-Industry and Commerce), while the organizations are Bangladesh Atomic Commission (Science and Technology) and Suchana Foundation (Social Reform) and Colsindur Village (Sports). The recepints will get cash, gold medal and certificate.
On Monday, the MBL in association with the Bangladesh Thalassaemia Hospital organised a blood donation programme.
