Business Desk :
Mongla Export Processing Zone (EPZ) has opened a dormitory for female workers, the first such facility in the country’s eight manufacturing enclaves, to solve their accommodation problems. The executive chairman of the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (Bepza) Abul Kalam Mohammad Ziaur Rahman inaugurated the four-storied dormitory at a programme in the Mongla EPZ on Thursday. The Bepza has constructed the dormitory with an accommodation capacity of 1,008. This is the first female dormitory for EPZ workers in Bangladesh. Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Rahman said the dormitory has been built following the instruction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina so that female workers can live there alone or with their families. “We will build dormitories for female workers in other EPZs in phases based on its success and requirements,” he said. The dormitory, built on 3.08 acres of land and at a cost of Tk 26.27 crore, has 126 rooms with modern living facilities, said a press release. There is a dining room where 500 people can dine at a time, an indoor gaming room for recreation, a TV room, a prayer room or community space, and a daycare room.
There is a generator for an uninterrupted power supply and purified drinking water facilities at the dormitory.
In addition to security guards, a CCTV surveillance system is available to ensure full-time security and adequate manpower has been deployed to ensure other services, said the press release.
