MEPs briefed over BD’s development efforts

Bangladesh has briefed Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) about development initiatives and achievements of Bangladesh, including recently adopted Child Marriage Restraint Act, during the last few years.
Law Minister Anisul Huq and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam briefed the MEPs at the European Parliament, Brussels on Thursday.
The MEPs of the Delegation for relations with South Asia welcomed Minister Huq and the State Minister Shahriar Alam at the European Parliament.
The Ministers were invited to attend a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee, Foreign Ministry said here on Friday.
In the meeting of the Committee, they explained the stable and sustainable growth rate that has been achieved by Bangladesh under the present government.
Briefing the Parliamentarians about the recently adopted Child Marriage Restraint Act the Law Minister and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs explained the rationale of the law, its relevance, and how the society already has seen the positive results after enactment of this law.
They also tried to dispel any misgiving the MEPs might have because of misinformation. The issue of Rohingya crisis also came up for discussion in the meeting.
The Ministers requested the European Parliament to help the Rohingyas to get back their citizenship of Myanmar with full rights, responsibilities and dignity.
Minister Anisul Huq briefed the MEPs about the current state of play regarding the proposed EPZ Labor Law. He informed that further negotiations would take place on the draft law.
Earlier, they held meeting with Mariane Thyssen, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labor Mobility at the headquarters of the European Union.
Meanwhile, Anisul Huq and Shahriar Alam and Bangladesh Ambassador to EU attended the briefing seminar organised and hosted by the European Institute of Asian Studies (EIAS), in collaboration with Bangladesh Embassy in Brussels.
European External Action Service (EU Foreign Service) Head of South Asia Veronica Cody and members of different diplomatic missions, think-tanks, and civil society, among others, were also present at the event.
