President of Bangladesh Workers Party Rashed Khan Menon said his party would take part in the next general elections with Awami League-led 14-party alliance.
“The next parliamentary polls will be different and difficult as all political parties including BNP are likely to join it”, he said this on Thursday while addressing a press conference at National Press Club. He came up with the remarks two days after BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia said her party would contest in the polls but the election must be held under an interim non-partisan administration.
The Workers Party of Bangladesh organised the press conference where General Secretary of the party Fazley Hossain Badsha read out the written speech.
Menon, the newly appointed Social Welfare Minister, said it would be suicidal if any party in the AL-led 14-party grand alliance takes go alone policy regarding the next election.
“All should be united in the next parliamentary polls for keeping the trend of non-communalism, democracy and development uninterrupted and that’s why we will participate in the polls under the grand alliance.” He also cautioned that the trend of the development likely to be disrupted if anyone independently contests in the polls.
Highlighting the necessity of unity in all spheres, the Workers Party chief said, “There is no alternative to unity for winning the election.” Terming his new appointment to the social welfare ministry ‘challenging’, Menon said the new ministry is relatively linked with safety and welfare of the people, so responsibility is more here than any other ministries. The Aviation and Tourism sector was an unprofitable sector, but the sector became a profitable one for the three consecutive years during his tenure, said the social welfare minister, adding that “I expect that I will do better job in my new assignment.”
About the present development trend of the country, Menon said the country is progressing toward continuous development with increase of the national growth rate to 7.28 per cent from 6 per cent and per capita income stands at 1,600 US dollars.
Even the poverty rate was 45 per cent in 2005 and now it is decline to 22 per cent, he added.
The country is now self-sufficient in food production, electricity reaches to every house in the rural areas and a revolutionary change has come into the communication sector, the minister elaborated. At the press conference, he announced a 21-point programme as part of his party’s plan for the country’s different sectors including road, transport, communication, agriculture and education.
Workers Party will hold a rally in city’s Suhrawardy Udyan on February 3, the minister informed journalists.
