A leader of BNP’s youth affiliate in Meherpur has been murdered.
Abul Khayer, 35, was attacked with sharp weapons Sunday night on his way back home, police said.
He was taken to local hospital and later shifted to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where he died early morning Monday, said the family.
Khayer, a businessman, was the joint secretary of Gangni Upazila unit of Juba Dal, the BNP’s youth front.
His brother Insarul Haque, a Gangni municipality councillor, said Khayer was attacked around 9pm on Sunday, when he was returning home on his motorcycle. He said the attackers were six to seven in number and that they also vandalised his motorcycle. Haque said that the attackers had sought to extort money from him.
Local police OC Anwar Hossain said that they were aware of a feud over extortion and that a drive has been launched to arrest the suspects.
