A 12-wicket haul by right-arm off-spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz powered Tigers to register an easy 108-run victory over the England on the third day of the second Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
By virtue of yesterday’s victory, Bangladesh drew the two-match Test series 1-1 and earned the maiden Test victory against England.
Bangladesh lost to England by 22 runs in the first Test at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on October 24.
Winning in the coin session Bangladesh decided to bat first and scored 220 in the first innings on the first day (Friday).
In reply, England made 244 in the first innings on the second day (Saturday).
Bangladesh were at the stumps on 152 for the loss of three wickets.
Resuming with the over-night score of 152, Bangladesh piled up a fighting total of 296 in the second innings on the third day and set a 273-run target for England to win.
Chasing 273 runs to win, England were bundled out for a paltry 164 on the third day (Sunday).
Mehedi Hasan Miraz played the key role in wrecking England second innings and finished his third day spell as 21.3-2-77-6. Miraz is the first Bangladesh bowler who bagged back-to-back five-wicket haul in first two Test matches. Mehedi Hasan Miraz was adjudged the Man of the Match and was also adjudged the Player of the Series.
Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan gave him a good support in demolishing England second innings bagging four wickets at the cost of 49 runs.
Earlier, Mehedi Hasan Miraz scalped six for 82 in the first innings.
Opener Imrul Kayes (59) resumed his second innings with Shakib Al Hasan on the third day. They put on 48 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Imrul Kayes was trapped leg before wicket by Moeen Ali when the Tigers’ total was 200 for the loss of four wickets.
Kayes hit a superb 78. His 120-ball innings was laced with nine fours.
After dismissal of Kayes, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim contributed together 38 runs in the fifth wicket stand before Shakib was bowled out by Adil Rashid when the hosts’ score was 238 for the loss of five wickets. Shakib knocked a calm 41 off 81 balls. His 94-minute innings was belted with five fours.
After departure of Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim (9) was caught at the slip by Alastair Cook off Ben Stokes when Bangladesh’s total was 238 for the loss of six wickets.Then Sabbir Rahman and Shuvagata Hom added together 30 runs for the seventh wicket partnership before Sabbir (15) was trapped leg before wicket when the Tigers’ score was 268 for the loss of seven wickets.
After dismissal of Sabbir Rahman, Bangladesh batsmen failed to make any notable partnership.
Shuvagata Hom remained undefeated with 25. He hit four fours in his 28-ball innings.
Adil Rashid captured four wickets at the cost of 52 runs, while Ben Stokes grabbed three wickets for 52 runs.
England made a good start with two openers Alastair Cook and Ben Duckett put on together exact 100 runs.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz gave his team breakthrough as Duckett was trapped leg before wicket by Miraz magic.
Then England lost their batsmen in regular intervals.
Alstair Cook and Duckett fought back against the superb spin attack of Bangladesh.
Cook notched up 59 before he was caught at the silly point by Mominul Haque of Mahedi Hasan Miraz when England’s score was 127 for the loss of five wickets.
Earlier, Joe Root (1) was trapped leg before wicket by Shakib Al Hasan when the visitors’ total was 105 for the loss of two wickets.
Then Miraz dismissed Gary Ballance for five and Moeen Ali for naught.
Ben Stokes was the other English batsman, who could reach double-digit figures scoring 25.He was bowled out by Shakib Al Hasan when the tourists’ score was 161 for the loss of seven wickets.
Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Adil Rashid for zero and Zafar Ansai for naught.
Then Mehedi Hasan Miraz dismissed Steven Finn for a duck and England’s was concluded.
