A Dhaka court has placed Iftekhar Abedin on a three-day remand in a case filed over the death of his wife Elma Chowdhury Meghla, a Dhaka University student.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashek Imam passed the order after hearing police’s 7-day remand plea on Wednesday afternoon.
Elma Chowdhury Meghla, a student of Department of Dance (2015-16 session), was allegedly killed by her husband on Tuesday night.
Meghla’s relatives and fellows alleged that Meghla died after being tortured at her in-laws’ house on Tuesday afternoon. Later, she was taken to the United Hospital in Gulshan where the duty doctor declared her dead.
According to Meghla’s uncle Iqbal Hossen, “We received a call from Meghla’s husband on Tuesday afternoon that Meghla was ill and taken to United Hospital, but when we got to see her, she was dead”.
“We saw several signs of torture on her body, what we assume is that it is a murder,” Momo, a friend of Meghla who saw her at the hospital.
They suspected that she was tortured to death as there were injury marks on her body. She was later hanged in order to call it a suicide. They also claimed that she cannot commit suicide.
They demanded a fair and impartial investigation of the incident.
Meghla’s husband, Iftekhar Abedin, 36, is an expatriate who returned to the country from Canada two days back.
A case has been filed with Banani Police Station on Wednesday against Iftekhar Abedin and his parents for allegedly killing his wife Meghla.

Meghla’s husband has been taken to Banani police station, Nure Azam Miya, OC of Banani thana, said.
