BSS, Dhaka :
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has undertaken a mega project worth about Taka 2,000 crore for making the Buriganga pollution-free and its beautification.
The total project will be implemented in 20 years. But work will begin towards the end of the current month of November in the area from Babubazar Bridge to Sadarghat under a pilot project.
On the basis of the pilot project, the implementation of the total project will begin from Hazaribagh to Pagla toward the end of 2017.
DSCC has taken the initiative with the financial assistance of World Bank and Bangladesh Municipal Development Fund. Under the project, both the banks of the Buriganga will be brought under beatification like Hatirjhil in the country and Kallang and Singapore rivers in Singapore.
Talking to BSS, DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokan said Buriganga is an integral part of the history of Dhaka. But the river is dying now, he added.
He hoped that the Buriganga will become the second Hatirjhil of Dhaka with the implementation of the project.
BSCC Chief Urban Planner Sirajul Islam said World Bank representatives have already held several meetings with Mayor Sayeed Khokan over the project and committed to give Taka 1,600 for its implementation.
The DSCC will give the rest of the money from its own fund, he added.
Sirajul Islam said besides beautification, the normal flow of the river would be brought back through implementation of the project.
There will be luxurious resorts, walkways, recreation parks, floating recreation centers, boats and restaurants in and around the Buriganga. Improved bus services will be available on broad roads on both sides of the river.
DSCC officials said several hundred thousand tonnes wastes, including harmful chemicals, is being released into the Buriganga through 18 sluice gates.
At the beginning of the project implementation, seven to eight refining plants will be set up in the first phase for filtering the polluted water coming through the 18 sluice gates. More plants will be set up later.
Measures would be taken to keep the river water clean following the methods used in Singapore, Korea, Vietnam and Japan.
DSCC Executive Officer Khan Mohammad Billal Hossain hoped the Buriganga will be a safe destination for the recreationists and nature lovers after implementation of the mega project.
