Medicines pile up as non-Covid patients avoid govt hospitals

Medicines and medical materials of several crores of taka will be date expired in government Covid dedicated hospitals, as non-covid treatment was disrupted widely.
Sources said that about 47 types of medicines used to treat patients free in cost in government hospitals. Besides, saline, pathological re-agents and other medical materials used to collect in government hospitals every year.
As per the routine purchasing, government has bought and delivered medicines and other medical supplies to hospitals, including 86 Covid dedicated hospitals across the country.
Meanwhile, the non-covid medical treatments have been interrupted widely due to the pandemic across the country which left medicines and other materials of crores of Taka unused in those hospitals.
Officials from different covid dedicated hospitals said there were enormous amount of medicines and medical stuffs of thousands of Taka are remaining unused in each health facilities.  
They said preferring anonymity if those things are not distributed among other hospitals and clinics, a big portion of those would be date expired soon.
When contacted, Professor Dr. Faruk Ahmed, Director of Sheikh Russel National Gastroliver Institute and Hospital told The New Nation on Friday, “It is true that non-covid patients are now reluctant to come to hospitals due to the pandemic. Without serious emergency condition, major portion of non-covid patients try to avoid hospitals for fear of contamination of Coronavirus.”
The Director said, “The medical treatment of non-covid portions of general hospitals was surely disrupted for fear of coronavirus spreading. In this circumstance, medicines and stuffs used for non covid treatment are remaining unused. We have disbursed a portion of those stuffs to others (hospitals) which were needed.”
He said that they have taken an early step to reimburse their unused medicines so that there will be very little to be remained.
When contacted, Dr. Asim Kumar Nath, Director of Mugda Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, told The New Nation on Friday, “Surely some medicines are remaining unused for long because non-covid treatment facilities seemed to be kept idle in the era of the pandemic.”
He said, “We are trying our best to disburse our unused and possible unusable medicines and other medical materials to other hospitals which are needed those of stuffs.”
Meanwhile, the officials from different hospitals said on condition of anonymity that most of the medicines and other stuffs will be date expired, as every medical facilities have their own supplies.
“Which hospitals will take our stuffs while they also have their own stocks. Besides, the non-covid treatment scenario is almost similar disrupted in every hospital,” said a physician of a covid dedicated hospital in the capital.
The physician said that medicines and other stuffs worth of about Tk 70 to Tk 80 lakh would remain unused in only a section of the hospital.
“Moreover, it is beyond prediction that how much worthy medicines and materials would be date expired in this year,” the physician said preferring not to be named as he is not right person to make comment on the matter.
