Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, said on Tuesday that it was appreciable that the mass media had broken from the mould of news and entertainment and gone beyond to address issues like democracy, development, health, education and innovation these days.
He also said that the government had placed the highest priority to security and development of child rights and that the signing of the MOU between UNICEF and five TV channels was “one more step forward”.
“It would open up a new horizon”, he said.
The minster was speaking as chief guest at the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony between UNICEF and 5 Bangladeshi television channels.
Under the programme UNICEF would produce the material while the TV channels would broadcast the programmes, free of cost.
Inu requested the TV channels to not only give “One Minute for the Child” which UNICEF would produce but also do some production of their own.
He also said his ministry was also discussing the matter of child nutrition with WFP.
Inu also took up the issue of child labour and child marriage and said ending them was a government priority.
Referring to maternal health, he said it was important that pregnant mothers are ensured proper nutrition, before, during and after child birth.
Inu also emphasized the issue of child repression and said that the government of Sheikh Hasina had taken concrete steps to stop it.
The meeting was also attended by senior UNICEF officials and senior functionaries of the 5 TV channels.
