Highlighting the success achieved in the fisheries sector some fisheries officers in a view-sharing meeting with journalists here Saturday sought media support to depict the achievements before the public in general.
By dint of diversified efforts of government and non-governments authorities concerned, the Rajshahi has attained success of surplus fish production for the last couple of years.
After meeting up its gradually increasing local demand, the district has been supplying at least 100 trucks of fish to different districts including the capital Dhaka every day.
District Fisheries Officer Golam Rabbani, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Shahed Ali and President of Rajshahi Press Club Anwarul Alam Fatik spoke on the occasion.
Department of Fisheries organized the programme at its conference hall as part of observation of the Fisheries Week-2015.
Golam Rabbani told the newsmen that around 66,882 metric tons of fishes were harvested from 48,678 open and closed water bodies in 2014 against the demand of 51,151 metric tons.
In 2013, the district yielded 61,768 metric tons. In the current year, the fish production target was set to 70,084 metric tons and the target is expected to be achieved.
There are 47,984 ponds measuring 10,716 hectares and 694 open water bodies including canal, beel, river and floodplain. In addition to the surplus fish production, Rajshahi has another fame of selling and supplying live fish to different destinations.
Many people including the professionals’ ones have built their fortune through the fish farming activities. Fish farming has the potential to contribute to poverty reduction and food security through a number of pathways, including employment, incomes and fish consumption.
Golam Rabbani, however, underscored the need for safe fish farming besides promoting its production through the best use of hygienic fish feed alongside the existing natural resources.
He viewed that safe fish production and its marketing has become a big challenge at present and this is the high time for facing the challenge collectively.
In addition to the administrative measures, time has come to forge social resistance against the manufacturing of adulterated and unhygienic fish meals, its marketing and use of formalin in fishes.
Referring to the immense prospect of the fisheries sector the speakers said safe fish production could easily be increased to a great extent if the natural resources were utilized properly.
Good aquaculture practice and improvement of quality control expertise are required for ensuring safe fisheries production of the country.
