Speakers at a seminar on Thursday demanded enactment of a media-friendly broadcasting policy to help media from circulating false and fabricated news
“It is a good initiative that the government is going to make a broadcasting policy in the country, the purpose whereof should not aim at controlling the media because that will not be a god sign for the society,” they said.
The speakers said this at a seminar titled “National Broadcasting Policy-2014” held in the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University. The Dhaka
University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) organized the seminar. DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A A M S Arefin Siddique was present as the chief guest while the Information Affairs Adviser of Prime Minister (PM) Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and Founding Member of DUJA Aftab Uddin Manik attended as the special guests.
Chairman of Television and Film Studies Department of DU Professor Dr AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan presented the keynote paper on the broadcasting policy, while DUJA President M M Jasim presided at the programme. DUJA General Secretary Saddam Hossain moderated it.
The Editor of daily Sokaler Khabar Mozammel Hossein, DUTA General Secretary Professor ASM Maksud Kamal, DU Syndicate Member Professor Lutfar Rahman, Professor Laila Noor Islam, Professor Sukumal Barua, Professor Tahmina Akter Topi, President of DU Alumni Association Raquibuddin Ahmed, Director of Teacher-Student Center (TSC) Alamgir Hossain, Doctor Shahjahan Kamal, BCL president H M Badiuzzaman Sohag, Vice-Presidents Imaul Haque Sarker Titu and Joydeb Nandi, Joint-General Secretaries Shamsul Kabir Rahat and Mostafizur Rahman Mostaque, DU unit President Mehedi Hasan and General Secretary Omar Sharif, JCD Joint-General Secretary Akramul Hasan, DU unit President Mahidul Hasan Hiru, General Secretary Masud Khan Parvej and Organising Secretary Minhajul Islam Bhuiyan, Chhatra Union President Hasan Taraque and JSD backed Bangladesh Chhatra League General Secretary Shahjahan Ali Saju were present, among others.
The VC said that the journalists should be more objective about the political views.
“False and fabricated news misleads the country’s people. As such, government should take initiative about introducing the broadcast policy to check hate-campaign and false propaganda, he said. He urged the media activists to be more conscious in this regard.
Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said that the broadcast policy should be guided by the democratic values. “Godfathers, criminals and dishonest businessmen should not be an owner of the media since they serve their own interest.
AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan said that the broadcast policy serves state security, forms public opinion, and helps build national identity.
“After having this policy enacted as law, it should create the independent commission and strive for a comprehensive policy for electronic communication media including Radio and TV” he said.
